Xin Sheying (New Photography)

2016

Xin Sheying is a conceptual exercise that examines the boundaries of the definition of photography. The image itself is a computer rendered depiction of Lujiazui, the core area of Shanghai’s financial district. This rendered image is first computated, then printed digitally on chromogenic paper and finally installed in a sunlight exposed corner of the gallery.

The dilema as to this image's photographic authenticity lies in the fact that while it does share many similitudes with the Photograph, it lacks a crucial ingredient to be fully recognized as a such: sunlight.

Under exhibition conditions, Xin Shenying slowly degrades due to sun damage while at the same time gaining the one trait it always longed for.
